Will my garment shrink in the dryer?
Garments made of 95% cotton/5% spandex will shrink in the dryer between two and five percent. We recommend a low dryer setting, and that you turn printed garments inside out to protect the artwork.
We do not recommend tumble drying for our stretch poplin garments (65% cotton/30% nylon/5% spandex). Fortunately, they dry very quickly on their own!
Will the colors run?
Generally speaking, our clothing is color-safe, but as a precaution we recommend washing in cold water with similar colors.
Does your sizing run large or small?
Our clothing is cut for a slightly roomier fit. If you prefer to wear your clothing tight, you may want to choose a smaller size.
Will you start making plus sizes?
Our current range of sizes is extra-small to extra-large. Because we use stretchy materials and cut our sizes generously, our extra-large works well for many customers who normally wear plus-sizes.
If you are interested in a future Kaladanda plus-size line, we would love to hear from you about what size you are looking for and which of our styles you like.
Where is your clothing manufactured?
Our clothing is manufactured by a family-owned business in South Korea, whose owners we have known for years.
Is your clothing made in sweatshops?
No. We have visited the factory ourselves and confirmed that it is a safe and agreeable work environment. We will continue to monitor the situation with all our suppliers, present and future, and try to help raise standards for apparel manufacturing worldwide.
What about organic cotton?
We have found a good supplier of organic fabrics and will be incorporating organics into our next line.
Do you use earth-friendly dyes?
Not yet, but we intend to switch to them as soon as possible, particularly in our upcoming organic pieces. We are also investigating non-polluting methods of screen printing, which we plan to adopt at the same time.
Safeguarding the earth and protecting the health of our suppliers is very important to us and essential to our overall mission. Because of the challenges of launching a clothing company from the ground up, we have not yet achieved all our goals in this arena, but we are committed to mastering these and all other aspects of ahimsa.
Where do your images come from?
Most of our images come from the Asian Classics Input Project (ACIP), a non-profit organization which locates, digitizes, and freely distributes Tibetan and Sanskrit religious and cultural texts. The images mainly come from woodblock prints in ancient scriptures recovered by ACIP.
What does the image on the back of the Yogi Body t-shirt mean?
The image on the back of the Yogi Body t-shirt was inspired by a secret drawing inside the meditation cave of the Dalai Lamas in Tibet. It represents the three main subtle channels of the inner body: the central channel (sushumna), and the two side channels (ida and pingala). The central channel is said to be the locus of all thoughts involving compassion and selfless love, while the two side channels are stirred by thoughts of anger or attachment. The symbol at the top of the drawing is a Tibetan OM syllable.
According to scripture, the two side channels are normally twisted around the central channel, preventing our flow of kindness and true happiness. But in this image, the central channel runs unimpeded, which is one of yoga's highest goals.
To learn more about the inner channels, and about using yoga to transform them, we recommend you find a yoga teacher who is well-trained by Indian masters or their direct disciples. Ashtanga, Iyengar, Anusara, Kundalini and Jivamukti are examples of the many such lineages flourishing today in the West.
You can also learn about yoga and the inner body from the Yoga Studies Institute, which offers in-depth workshops in the USA, Canada, Europe and Asia.
What does kaladanda mean?
Kala means “time” or “death,” and danda (which literally means “stick” or “staff”) has the figurative meaning “the power to stop.” Together, kaladanda means “power over death,” which we like to think of as “beating death with a stick.”
Our name, therefore, refers the true aim of yoga: to transform the world by transforming ourselves, and to overcome even time and death.
